The Proactive Job Search

In today’s volatile economic landscape, many professionals—some of whom have enjoyed long-term tenure with their employers—are finding themselves unexpectedly back in the job market. As of 2025, shifting business priorities, AI-driven automation, chaotic economic policies, and continued post-pandemic realignment have contributed to growing uncertainty in several industries, including tech, finance, healthcare, and manufacturing.

Even those who feel secure in their roles would be wise to prepare for change. Being proactive in your career planning is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity. Whether or not you’re currently job hunting, here are four key steps every employed professional should take now to future-proof their career.

1. Update your résumé. Everyone dreads doing their résumé. Staring at a blank Word document, starting from scratch, can be tough – even tougher if you haven’t done a résumé in a few years. Be proactive. Update your résumé now while you are employed. You’ll find it much easier to describe what you do and to quantify your achievements. Plus, it’s easier to compose when the pressure isn’t on to get it done right away.  Your online “resume” should get some attention too;  make sure your LinkedIn profile is current, robust, and matches your resume exactly.

👉 Tip: Save your résumé in both PDF and Word formats. Keep a master copy that you can tailor to specific job postings when needed.

2. Do your research. When was the last time you looked at the jobs available in your field? When did you last visit online job boards? If it was when you found your current job and if that was more than 2 years ago, look again. You need to be familiar with companies that hire in your field and with competitors of your current company. It is easier to find a job when you have one, so even if you aren’t truly looking for another position, see what’s out there. Who knows, you may stumble across a better opportunity.

👉 Tip: Set up job alerts on platforms like LinkedIn, Indeed, and industry-specific boards. Even passive monitoring can help you identify trends.

3. Feed your network. As with your resume, don’t wait until the pressure is on to nurture your network. Going to a mixer once in a while and collecting business cards is not effective networking. You need to maintain strong relationships with people that can help you if you find yourself looking for a new job. That may be people that belong to the same professional organizations that you do, former colleagues or classmates from the past. Make the most of your network by attending meetings, keeping in touch with friends, and taking people to lunch. And don’t forget the online aspect of networking. Get acquainted with LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. They can make reconnecting with friends and colleagues easy. Even better, get involved in the community. You’ll not only feed your network, you’ll also contribute something positive, and you’ll feel good about it.

👉 Tip: Make it a goal to connect meaningfully with one new or existing contact each week.

4. Exercise your right brain. It’s not too late to make yourself less outsourceable. Practice skills to make you more valuable to either your current employer or to your next employer. Read Dan Pink’s “A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future” and work on your six critical senses for the future: design, story, symphony, empathy, play, and meaning. The book not only explains how each sense applies to both your business and personal life, but it also includes a portfolio for each, with tools and exercises to help you really cultivate each sense.

👉 Tip: Supplement your reading with free or low-cost online courses to reinforce these capabilities in practical ways (e.g., Coursera, edX, or LinkedIn Learning).
